Kaminey - Opinion Divided!

Reasons which make a film HIT or FLOP

I am sure it might have been not very long since you have asked yourself the following two questions :-
Film to bohot achchi thi yaar, flop kaise ho gayi ?
                                     &
Itni bakwaas film kaise hit ho gayi pataa nahi ?

Kaminey’s fantastic opening at the box office is the latest example of how heavy publicity can make cash registers go ringing. I do not mean that it’s a bad movie, but it falls a little short of your expectations. It was another overhyped film which promised to be path breaking and thought provoking, but surely, it is not. The narrative of Kaminey dominated by gang-war and drug mafia doesn’t sound absolutely innovative. The writing is inconsistent as it enters late into every scene and makes an early exit. The story-telling involves a multitude of characters, none of them being conventionally introduced or established. You are expected to adapt with each of them on your own and learn their conflicts, as the story progresses promptly. The second half tends to stretch with too many twists in the plot which makes it less gripping than the first one. There are moments when it looks as if things will come together again, but those keep getting further apart. And then the director succumbs to his fatal flaw of not managing a wrap—in the climax, as a Mumbai basti turns into the wild battlefield. It all becomes too much noise, not enough traction.

You would like Kaminey for sure, if you lower your expectations before entering the cinema hall because this movie does not behave in exactly the same manner as it was promoted.

Before its release, Kaminey’s major promotional weapons were DhanTaNan, Shahid’s new avtaar, same for Priyanka, and Vishal Bhardwaj’s experimental way of thinking, writing and directing.

After watching Kaminey its upto you to decide whether you received what you were promised for.

Today, in Bollywood, almost 30 percent of the budget of a film is kept for its marketing strategies and promotional events. The most important publicity tool for any movie is its promo. A promo, which creates stupendous excitement among the audience to force them into theater, is considered to be an ideal one.

The dazzling promos of All The Best – a Ajay Devgan home production with the Golmaal series director Rohit Shetty and Blue – a star studded mega budget film, both releasing on the same day,16th October a day before Laxmi Poojan, will definitely eat each other’s business if the release dates are not rescheduled.

Bollywood has discovered many innovative ways for publicity.

Akshay Kumar traveled in a hot-air-balloon with Deepika Padukone to promote Chandini Chowk to China. Shahrukh Khan made almost everybody feel guilty if you do not go to watch his six packs in his Om Shanti Om. He also distributed the movie tickets to the commentators as well as the stadium staff which almost drove him to a controversy. But no one can forget Aamir Khan’s publicity hammering for Ghajini, he planted his bare-chested Ghajini style mannequins at all the multiplexes on the same day when Rab ne Bana di Jodi was released. We also witnessed the videos of Aamir giving a Ghajini haircut to the multiplex staff. Aamir, Hats-off to you, that’s the reason why Ghajini collected 200 crores worldwide in just a few weeks.

Ghajini Promotion
